Foundations of Argentine Tango:
Tango 101 Classes for Absolute Beginners
Tango 101 classes are designed for:
Tango 101 is taught in a six-week series format. We will learn the basic vocabulary of social Argentine tango including: the embrace, the tango walk, giros (turns), the box step, cruzada, the parallel and cross system, front and back ochos, ocho cortado, and paradas/pasadas,. Floorcraft is highly emphasized, we want our students to be able to dance well and safely at any milonga. We aim to progress through three to four back to back six-week sessions to get you up to the Intermediate level. We will start learning in an open embrace, and introduce a closer embrace that is primarily used at tango social dances in the second six-week series. Class size is limited. Pre-registration is required for this level. $95 per person for six-weeks. |
Intermediate/Advanced Level Classes
Various topics are covered in this class taught in a monthly format. We will focus on introducing more challenging tango figures while also working on technique, musicality, and connection. Email us for current class topic. Dancers with prior Argentine tango experience that feel they are at an advanced beginner or intermediate level or above, and have had some practice and proficiency with the movements described in Tango 101, are welcome to drop-in to this class throughout the month. Cost is $60 for the month (four classes) or $15 drop-in rate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need a partner?
No partner needed. Many people do not come with a partner, though you are welcome to take the class with a partner. We rotate partners in class and feel that trying out steps and techniques with many partners helps accelerate learning, and builds versatile, adaptable dancers. That being said, if you come with a partner, you can choose to just dance with your partner for the entire class.

Q: What type of shoes should I wear?
For beginner's tango classes we recommend that you wear dance shoes or any style of street shoe that is comfortable and allows you to easily pivot/spin on the ball of your foot on a wooden floor. Avoid anything with a pointed toe that elongates the foot or any shoe with a black sole that would leave marks on a light colored dance floor. You can also get by in sneakers like Puma, Converse or Tom's shoes. Flats or heels are fine for ladies; wear what is most comfortable. Clean socks are also an easy option for men and women. If you already have some type of dance shoes, those are great to wear. Examples: tango, ballroom, swing or salsa shoes. Jazz shoes or dance sneakers are also great for class. You do not need to buy new shoes for class unless you want to. Once you are sure that you will be studying tango for a while, we recommend buying a pair of tango shoes. Shoes are the only "equipment" you need for tango, so if you have the money to invest, a pair of high quality tango shoes can really make a difference in your dancing. See our Tango Shoes webpage for more info. |
Q: What kind of clothing should I wear?
You should wear clothes that you are comfortable moving in. We will not be doing anything extremely aerobic, so you don't need to come dressed for the gym or a yoga class, but tight jeans may feel too restrictive. Typically, men wear dress pants and a nice shirt, women wear flowing pants or casual dresses & skirts, or leggings under a skirt or dress. Some people love dressing up for class and some prefer to wear a t-shirt and jeans. Simply wear what you are comfortable in.
Please Note: Personal hygiene is important in partner dancing, as we are in close proximity to others. Please come to class with a clean body and clothes and fresh breath. Refrain from wearing cologne, perfume or other scented products to class, as many people are very sensitive to the chemicals in synthetic fragrances. Also, if you smoke, please do not smoke right before class, as the scent lingers and can bother other dancers.
Q: How early should I arrive and where should I park?
For the first class in a series try to arrive 10-15 minutes early to pay and check-in. For the following classes, arrive so you have enough time to change your shoes and get settled in and perhaps to warm-up to a song or two. City Dance Olympia has a large parking lot, so park there. If it is full, there is free street parking after 5pm.
